The 2022 Toronto Municipal Election is fast approaching, and with it, an opportunity to shape the composition of Toronto’s 2022-2026 Council by voting for those that will champion the policy priorities we value most.
Cycle Toronto, in partnership with The Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT), Walk Toronto, and Friends and Families for Safe Streets (FFSS) are calling on candidates to commit to our campaign for Safe & Active Streets for All. To make our city streets safer, better connected and more sustainable for people of all ages and abilities, we are collectively calling for the implementation of 10 priority actions:
- Building Complete Streets across every ward in Toronto
- Establishing and implementing a Vision Zero Safety Checklist
- Streamlining the traffic calming process across the city
- Reducing the traffic speed on our streets to 30 km/h and 40km/h on arterial roads
- Improving the safety and accessibility for people walking and using mobility devices
- Accelerating the Cycling Network Plan to provide safe and connected bike lanes in every ward
- Funding & supporting Active School Travel programs so young people can safely walk and bike to school
- Investing in equitable methods to manage traffic enforcement by reallocating resources away from on-the-ground police enforcement
- Providing regular and recurring car-free spaces for active transportation
- Supporting the multi-modal future of Toronto’s transportation system
Our streets are dangerous by design. They prioritize the movement of vehicular traffic over the majority of people who get around by walking, taking transit, biking or wheeling. We have the research, strategies and policies in place to make our city safer and sustainable for all – we just need the political will to implement them successfully and equitably city-wide.
Help us by signing and sharing our election campaign coalition pledge in support of Active and Safe Streets for All:
