TCAT’s Economic Impact Study of the Bloor Bike Lanes Published in JAPA

September 4, 2019 | by TCAT | Photo: Yvonne Verlinden

TCAT’s research into the impact of Toronto’s bike lane pilot project on Bloor Street has been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Planning Association (JAPA). Free copies of the article, titled “Measuring the Local Economic Impacts of Replacing On-Street Parking with Bike Lanes“, are available for a limited time online. The article describes research conducted by TCAT between 2015 and 2017, which found that, despite the removal of approximately 160 on-street parking spots and one traffic lane, business on Bloor Street continues to flourish.

More information about TCAT’s bike lanes and business research studies, including full study reports, can be found here: Bloor Street Bike Lane Economic Impact Studies. Below is a graphical one-page snapshot of TCAT’s 2017 findings.

One page snap shot of study results: there are more customers on Bloor, and they're spending more money. There are also more people cycling and they feel safer while cycling. In fact, driving is much less popular than most merchants believe.
