Today, TCAT, in collaboration with Ryerson University, made a submission to Metrolinx in response to their Discussion Paper for the Next Regional Transportation Plan.
Metrolinx’s proposed plan has an excellent vision of creating a multi-modal regional transportation system that prioritizes the movement of people over motor vehicles, and that makes walking and cycling realistic choices for most trips. However, our analysis found that there are many ways that walking and cycling could be better integrated with transit, and that the untapped potential for increasing walking and cycling is currently absent from the modeling predictions.
Ryerson and TCAT’s recent report, Cycling Behaviour and Potential in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, found there to be a very high potential across the region for shifting over 4 million trips from motor vehicle to bicycle. Our recommendations could help Metrolinx to actualize this potential. Read our response here.
The Discussion Paper is open to public feedback until November 30, 2016 at www.metrolinx.com/theplan.
