Alex Gatien is a recent graduate of York University’s Faculty of Environmental Studies in the Program in Planning. His research has looked at regional transportation planning in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, at the relationship between new public transit projects and spatial planning, and at ways to improve the integration of public transit and active transportation. Alex volunteered with TCAT in the summer of 2017, where he updated the Complete Streets for Canada website with new Complete Streets policies adopted by Canadian municipalities. In 2018 he worked on a project on improving public transit and active transportation integration that consists of a policy guide, a programming and infrastructure guide and audits for cycling and walking routes to transit. The guide, Improving Active Transportation and Public Transit Integration – A Guidebook for Policy and Planning, was released in 2019. Alex is an avid recreational and utilitarian cyclist, and has worked as a professional bike mechanic for 11 years. He believes that improved infrastructure for cycling and walking is an essential part of creating more livable, sustainable and equitable communities.
