Newcomer Youth Hone New Skills at Scarborough Cycles

This past month, another five youth (four boys and one girl) graduated from Scarborough Cycles’ Earn Your Bike program. Over eight weeks, these young people, all newcomers to Canada, worked with Hub Coordinator Marvin Macaraig to repair used bicycles that have been donated. They learned how to fix flats, replace brake cables, clean and adjust gears, and much more. This summer’s participants were helped by last year’s graduates, who have become stalwart volunteers at the hub’s regular Do-It-Yourself Drop-In sessions. Together, they were able to repair seven bicycles – one for each of the five participants to keep, and two more to donate to the bike club at a local high school.

The next round of classes begins today (Sep 21), with seven more newcomer youth. This fall, Scarborough Cycles will also be holding two Bike Maintenance 101 workshops, put on by Cycle Toronto, and open to all.
