On the first day of the City of Toronto’s 2014 Bike Month, TCAT releases the 5th video from their It’s Your Move series, featuring Donna Quan, Director of Education at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).
The TDSB launches today their inaugural Bike to School Day, in celebration of Bike Month. This announcement reinforces TDSB’s Charter for Active, Safe and Sustainable Transportation adopted in 2013 to promote, encourage and support active routes to school. TDSB’s district-wide charter made a commitment to increasing the number of students who walk or bike to school.
In the wake of Canada’s failing grade for youth physical activity from Active Healthy Kids Canada’s Annual Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, there is a demonstrated and dire need to integrate more physical activity into the lives of Canadian children and youth. “Removing the barriers to active transportation, and investing in the infrastructure is so important,” said Donna Quan, TDSB’s Director of Education.
According to TCAT Director Nancy Smith Lea, “We already know how to overcome virtually all of the barriers that exist preventing more children from cycling to school. What’s missing is the political will and sufficient investment to make it happen.”
TCAT's It's Your Move is a video series that is part of a strategic partnership with Metrolinx designed to promote the importance of walking and cycling. Each video in the 12-part series features a leader living in Halton, York, Peel, Durham, Hamilton or Toronto.
