Back by popular demand! This spring, Ryerson’s Chang School is once again offering Planning Active Transportation (CVUP 115). Developed and taught by Car Martin, TCAT Participatory Design Consultant, and Mikey Bennington, former TCAT Project Manager, this course explores how co-design and community engagement contribute to the built environment and health equity. Through case studies, the course looks at how these practices provide the basis for planning streets and public spaces that are safe, active, and healthy. The course is designed for built environment professionals and students from a variety of backgrounds, including urban planning, public health, transportation engineering, sustainability, and community development.
Students will gain the following skills:
-
Data management and translation – specifically working with community feedback as data to qualify designs and inform planning options for walking and cycling projects
-
Community engagement process planning
-
Stakeholder management
-
Partnership development skills
-
Strategizing for different policy contexts
-
Evidence-informed decision-making (for example, bridging population level health evidence with local context to more accurately assess potential health impacts)
-
Up to date urban design strategies and guidelines for walking and cycling
This course is intended for community organizers, advocates, built environment, transportation, active living or health professionals or anyone interested in active transportation and co-design techniques.
