The Provincial Policy Statement (PPS) “provides direction on matters of provincial interest related to land use planning and development.” All decisions – including municipal plans – must be consistent with the PPS, so it can potentially have a big impact on what happens in your community.
In accordance with the requirement that the PPS be reviewed every five years, the government is currently seeking public comment for its five-year review. The comment period was recently extended until October 29, 2010. More information can also be found on the Environmental Bill of Rights Environmental Registry.
EcoJustice is organizing a series of events surrounding the PPS and how best to use this planning tool to shape land-use and transportation planning in Ontario. On August 18, about 20 transportation experts and advocates gathered and listened a great presentation on the PPS, it’s objectives and relationship to other land-use planning laws in Ontario and brainstormed on how it should be amended to better promote sustainable transportation.
The next presentation will be on September 22, 2010. Mark it in your calendar now; more information to come later.
