2022 Municipal Candidate Survey Results Are In

October 19, 2022

Leading up to Toronto’s 2022 Municipal Election, TCAT joined Cycle Toronto, Walk Toronto, and Friends and Families for Safe Streets to ask candidates to commit to 10 priority actions in support of Safe and Active Streets for all. The results are in.

  • 64% of Mayoral and Councillor candidates completed our survey
  • 44% of incumbents responded (8 out of 18 councillors seeking re-election)
  • The two main Mayoral contenders (incumbent John Tory and Gil Penalosa) completed the survey – and both candidates responded positively to all 10 of our Priority Actions

Candidates responded overwhelmingly in support to our priority actions:

  1. Building Complete Streets across every ward in Toronto:
    1. Councillor: 100% yes
    2. Mayoral: 100% yes
  2. Implementing a Vision Zero Safety Checklist:
    1. Councillor: 99% yes
    2. Mayoral: 100% yes
  3. Streamlining & calming traffic equitably across the city:
    1. Councillor: 97%
    2. Mayoral: 93%
  4. Reducing traffic speed on streets & arterial roads:
    1. Councillor: 82% yes
    2. Mayoral: 79%
  5. Improving safety and accessibility for people:
    1. Councillor: 97% yes
    2. Mayoral: 100% yes
  6. Accelerating & expanding the Cycling Network Plan:
    1. Councillor: 95% yes
    2. Mayoral: 93%
  7. Funding & supporting Active School Travel programs so young people can safely walk and bike to school:
    1. Councillor: 97% yes
    2. Mayoral: 100% yes
  8. Investing in equitable methods for traffic enforcement away from on-the-ground police enforcement:
    1. Councillor: 88% yes
    2. Mayoral: 86%
  9. Reallocating road space for regular and recurring car-free spaces for active transportation:
    1. Councillor: 93% yes
    2. Mayoral: 86%
  10. Supporting the multi-modal future of Toronto’s transportation system:
    1. Councillor: 96% yes
    2. Mayoral: 93% yes
