In 2013, Toronto Public Health commissioned a project team led by Urban Design 4 Health, Ltd. and including TCAT, MMM Group, and PlaceScape, to develop a trio of reports (“Healthy Streets: Evidence Review”, “Healthy Streets: Jurisdictional Review” & “Healthy Streets: Design Features & Benefits”) published in 2014. The reports identify and assess published evidence for how specific street design choices influence health outcomes, incorporate the practical experiences of transportation and public health professionals interviewed from 10 North American jurisdictions, and draw conclusions about how the information can be used to promote healthier street design in Toronto. The reports informed the development of the City of Toronto’s Complete Streets guidelines completed in 2016.
