Today, TCAT releases the eighth video in the It`s Your Move series featuring Vito Tolone, Senior Transportation Planner at the City of Burlington.
This video highlights how Burlington’s recent Transportation Master Plan (TMP) update explicitly recognizes that the automobile is not the only way that people travel. The update, called Go Your Way, sets out a 20-year vision for transportation to ensure that the transportation infrastructure, services and operational policies are aligned to accommodate Burlington’s expected growth. To achieve this, the plan is focused on creating a balanced and accessible transportation system for all modes of travel including transit, cyclists, pedestrians and automobiles.
Burlington, and its innovative approach to accommodating on-street bike lanes without widening road capacity, was also featured in TCAT’s fresh-off-the-presses final report Identifying and Overcoming Barriers to the Implementation of Active Transportation Policies. The research study found that policy and practice aimed at incorporating facilities for active transportation as part of roadway projects in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) are evolving rapidly. However, institutionalized barriers continue to exist that promote roadway design primarily oriented toward accommodating motor vehicles.
The Big Move, Metrolinx’s 25-year regional transportation plan to dramatically improve transportation in the GTHA, includes 25% for local transportation initiatives. It’s Your Move is a strategic partnership with Metrolinx designed to promote the importance of allocating a dedicated portion of this 25% for walking and cycling projects. Each video in the 12-part series features a leader living in Halton, York, Peel, Durham, Hamilton or Toronto and shares personal and professional stories about the benefits of active transportation.
