New TCAT Backgrounders Released
On May 27, 2013, TCAT released the latest in our series of backgrounders. These easy-to-read, short reports are designed to synthesize and make accessible relevant research on topical issues.
Active Transportation and the Regional Transportation Plan: The Big Move – According to a recent Stratcom survey on behalf of TCAT and Share the Road Cycling Coalition, 73% of Ontarians agree that walking and cycling infrastructure investments should be included as part of The Big Move. Metrolinx has proposed a general framework of allocating 25% of the annual $2 billion for The Big Move to municipalities to pay for local projects of which 5% could include active transportation projects. Information is provided about the other 25%, the status of active transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, and how active transportation will support The Big Move.
Why Should We Invest in Active Transportation? – Research tells us that active transportation enjoys growing support – and there is also growing awareness of its wealth of social, economical and environmental benefits. Yet it’s far too easy for walking and cycling to get lost in the big conversation we’re having about regional transportation. This backgrounder provides information about the opportunity and strong support that exists for more investment in active transportation, comparative options and infographics for how to spend funds on active transportation as opposed to other transportation modes, and the multiple benefits of active transportation.
