On April 10, 2013 Toronto' Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) approved the recommendation to develop Complete Streets Guidelines for Toronto. The full wording of the recommendation can be found here.
Ryan Whitney, TCAT's Complete Streets Project Manager, made a deputation at PWIC in support of these recommendations. He says: "Complete Streets guidelines that provide technical design guidance are extremely useful and have the potential to create broad-based support for the implementation of Complete Streets throughout Toronto. This is a big step forward for Toronto!"
Toronto will join cities across the continent who have developed, or are developing, Complete Streets Guidelines to help transform their streets to meet the needs of all users. These cities include Calgary, Edmonton, New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. Stephen Buckley, Toronto's new General Manager of Transportation, was recruited from Philadelphia where he was responsible for the Complete Streets Design Handbook released in 2012. Mr. Buckley will provide opening remarks at TCAT's Complete Streets Forum on May 27th.
