The Toronto Center for Active Transportation, a project of the Clear Air Partnership, and the Share the Road Cycling Coalition are pleased to announce that our 2012 annual conferences will be a joint event.
The mission of both organizations is to create safer streets, with TCAT focusing on pedestrians and cyclists and STR working to promote cycling across Ontario. Always looking for opportunities to collaborate and support each other’s efforts, holding the Complete Streets Forum in tandem with the first Share the Road Ontario Bike Summit in Toronto presents the ideal opportunity to do so. TCAT and the Coalition both have a history of hosting events that inspire change. The joint conference will combine a wealth of experience, contacts, and resources.
Coalition CEO Eleanor McMahon and TCAT Director Nancy Smith Lea are working to develop complementary programming and speakers that enhance the learning, networking, and impact of the event. The Complete Streets Forum will take place on April 23rd, with a focus on accelerating implementation of Complete Streets policy and design through interactive presentations. The Ontario Bike Summit follows on April 24-25. Starting with guest speakers on relevant topics and workshops focused on sharing best practices in the 5 “Es“ of a Bicycle Friendly Community, the event will culminate with a Lobby Day at Queen’s Park. Attendees will benefit from reduced fees for both conferences and shared networking and social events.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Share the Road Cycling Coalition for their first Ontario Bike Summit in Toronto. TCAT offers programming related to all aspects of improving the pedestrian and cycling environment, from policy to design to community outreach. This joint event will leverage the expertise and resources of both organizations as well as participants,” said TCAT Director Nancy Smith Lea.
The fifth annual event for the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation, the Complete Streets Forum is in its third year following two Bike Summits. The conference evolved to encompass a holistic approach to transportation that includes all road users of all modes, ages, and abilities. The Forum advances TCAT’s mission of creating a better city for cycling and walking by sharing research, best practices, and creative solutions for designing safe and inviting streets for everyone.
Since 2009, Share the Road has hosted Ontario Bike Summits in Waterloo, Burlington, and Ottawa and in 2011 organized local Summits in Peterborough, Guelph, London, Essex and Sault St. Marie. These events connect cycling organizations and work on behalf of municipalities, fulfilling the Coalition’s mandate to build local capacity and develop provincial public policy, legislation and in general, advocate for an enhanced provincial role in supporting cycling and in particular, funding for cycling infrastructure.
According to Eleanor McMahon, CEO and Founder Share the Road Cycling Coalition, “holding an event which focuses on Complete Streets design, policy and implementation is an excellent way to begin three days of what promises to be an exciting and dynamic gathering of cyclists from across Ontario and indeed North America. For the first time we are holding the Ontario Bike Summit in Toronto. We are delighted to be partnering with TCAT and excited about this year’s joint event.“
Registration for both events will open in February, 2012.
