TCAT sent a SafeTrucks endorsement letter to the Minister of Transport in suppor of Private Member’s Bill C-344 which would require trucks operating on Canada’s roads to be equipped with sideguards, a measure to improve the safety of cyclists.

On Jan 29, 2013 TCAT made a submission to MTO in response to its draft Cycling Strategy. We begin our comments by describing two key issues that are not currently addressed in the draft strategy – 1) the need for targets to measure success, and 2) the need for a province-wide Complete Streets policy. On Nov 23, 2012 TCAT made a joint submission with Cycle Toronto, Eco Justice, and Transport Action, its second response to the Provincial Policy Statement, 2005. (TCAT's first response from 2010 can be found here.)

On October 10, 2012 TCAT submitted a submission to the Public Works & Infrastructure Commitee regarding changing the definition of a bicycle to include e-bikes. TCAT was one of the organizations invited by the Ministry of Transportation to provide input into e-bike regulations. As a result, we were pleased to see that new safety requirements were legislated.

In response to concerns related to the initial Fall of 2011 rollout of the InfoPillars (120 in total are called for by the City in the agreement), and their placement on Toronto's streets, City of Toronto staff explored a number of options with Astral. These included elimination of the element entirely, reducing the numbers to be deployed, redesign the ad faces, enhanced transit shelter ad capabilities, as well as variations on the placement parameters.

New info pillars were approved by Council in the summer of 2011 and have been installed at many sites across the downtown area since that time. From these initial installations, it is clear that these pillars raise important concerns about the prioritization of active transportation in Toronto.

On November 7, 2011 the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario announced that his office will be conducting a review led by Dr. Bert Lauwers, Deputy Chief Coroner into pedestrian deaths across the province. The purpose of the review is to identify common factors that have played a role in pedestrian deaths and where appropriate, make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

On October 24, 2011, the Chief Coroner of Ontario announced it will be conducting an investigation to review cycling deaths in Ontario. The review will be led by Dr. Dan Cass, Regional Supervising Coroner - Toronto West Region, and will include deaths from 2006 to 2010. The purpose of the review is to identify common factors that may have played a role in the deaths, and where possible, to make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
